HOW TO PROTECT YOUR HAIR THIS WINTER
BRRR…it’s that time a year again! While you no longer have to worry about all the sun and salt water damaging your hair, winter brings its own set of hair problems. The cold season is not only great to get comfortable with a cup of hot tea, it is also the perfect storm of bad conditions, from wind and freezing air that suck the moisture out of your hair, to dry, indoor heat that lead to split ends and breakage. But not to worry - no matter how low the thermostat falls, ViTA has a few tips and tricks that will keep your hair healthy and happy throughout the winter months…
WINTER HAIR CARE TIPS YOU NEED TO FOLLOW
We’ve all been there: the change of season for winter has our hair looking lifeless and our scalp feeling drier than ever. The lack of moisture in the air not only makes your hair brittle and more susceptible to damage, it also causes frizz and static – fortunately you have the scoop on some really great winter tips!
-
SHAMPOO LESS & USE THE RIGHT PRODUCTS. In winter, it’s best to shampoo as little as you can and use mild shampoos like ViTA to avoid drying out your hair and stripping it of its natural oils. 2-3 times a week should do the trick! Help your hair keep that much needed moisture by conditioning more often with a really rich, moisturizing conditioner – preferably one like ViTA that contains fatty acids and humectants, such as panthenol, which help attract and retain moisture in the hair. Before washing and conditioning your hair, make sure to check the ingredient list and stay away from products made of silicones or sulfates that will only dry your hair out faster.
-
CUT DOWN ON THE HEAT. Too much heat is always bad for your hair, as it can result in split ends and breakage - especially in the winter time when your hair is already more vulnerable. Whenever possible, let your hair air dry and refrain from using styling tools like flat irons.
-
NEVER GO OUTSIDE WITH DAMP HAIR. Although you might be in a rush when getting ready in the mornings, it’s critical to take some extra time to let your hair dry before running off into the cold. Why? Going outside with wet hair in cold weather causes your hair to expand and freeze, making it susceptible to breakage.
-
THROW ON THAT HAT. Looking for a reason to start wearing hats? Here it is! Keeping your hair covered is a great way to protect it from the cold. Just keep in mind that wool, cotton and other coarse fabrics can cause breakage and split ends, so be sure your hats are lined with smoother materials like silk or satin.
-
GET REGULAR TRIMS. Hate having to get a new look in the spring due to damaged and neglected hair? Having your tips cut regularly during the harsh winter time will keep your hair in good condition and reduce the risk of brittle hair and split ends.
-
FIGHT THE FRIZZ. Who doesn’t hate having to deal with static, frizzy hair? When your scarves and warm sweaters seem to be ganging up on your locks, try using a hair brush with natural bristles, like boar brittles, to avoid static electricity.
-
EAT A HEALTHY DIET & STAY HYDRATED. No matter what health or beauty problem you are dealing with, a balanced diet and hydration are usually always a major part of the solution. Feed your hair from the inside by including protein-rich foods (meat, fish, beans, yogurt, nuts), healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, avocados), Vitamin A (bananas, apples) and Zinc (fish, nuts, turkey) in your diet. Also, be sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to keep your hair hydrated.
-
TRY NEW HAIRSTYLES. Protective hairstyles like buns, braids or ponytails not only give your style that special touch, they are also great for protecting your hair from the cold.
-
TURN THE HOT WATER DOWN. Everyone loves taking a hot shower when it’s cold, but if you really want to take care of your scalp and hair, it’s best to turn the temperature down to keep your hair and skin from dehydrating.
