WHAT UNSUSTAINABLE, TOXIC PRODUCTS ARE DOING TO PLANET EARTH’S OCEANS
Have you ever thought about what happens to your skin and hair care products once they go down the drain? Where do they end up? Join ViTA to find out what toxic beauty care is really doing to our rivers, lakes, oceans and drinking water…
WHERE DOES YOUR SHAMPOO GO?
Let’s imagine you’ve just washed your hair and your shampoo and conditioner go into the wastewater system down the drain. You might think this system filters the water, so no harm done. However, if you are using products full of chemicals and unnatural ingredients, these chemicals can end up in the surface and groundwater, where they start accumulating over the years.
These contaminants may not only pose a health risk for you, but also for fish and aquatic life if they end up in their water. The endocrine system of fish can be severely affected, leading to reproductive and behavioral disorders as well as lowered immune system functionality. What does this mean for you? You may have not only put toxic chemicals on your body, but much of the fish you eat is probably poisoned and full of chemicals as well – and these harmful chemicals have now entered your body through two different channels.
WHAT ARE THESE CHEMICALS DOING TO YOU AND AQUATIC LIFE?
Let’s have a closer look at some of the most common questionable chemicals found in beauty products, none of which will ever be found in ViTA’s formulas.
-
PARABENS: Historically, found in almost all beauty and personal care products, these preservatives are thought to be endocrine disruptors. Fortunately, there are many paraben-free products available on the market, make sure that yours are.
-
SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE (SLS): This environmental toxin can also be used as a pesticide and can cause damage to internal organs. It is commonly used in shampoo and body washes to create a rich lather.
-
PHTHALATES: Another endocrine disrupter and the most frequent chemical found in fish samples and fragrances. Even if you can’t find it on the label, it might still be contained in your product, as there is no requirement for phthalates to be mentioned on labels. Make sure that your products are specifically labeled phthalates-free.
