PLANET TALK

THE CONSEQUENCES OF OCEAN PLASTIC POLLUTION

Every year around 300 million tons of plastic are produced, of which about 8 million tons are dumped into the world’s oceans. What are the consequences for marine life and the environment?

Well, given the fact that nearly every single piece of plastic ever made still exists today, the environmental impacts are severe. For one, these huge amounts of plastic wastes are damaging underwater ecosystems and endangering marine life habitats. Even in zones as deep as 10km underwater, marine life has been found to be polluted with chemicals and plastics!

WHY SHOULD YOU BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE OCEANS’ HEALTH?

1. THEY PROVIDE OXYGEN. 70% of the earth’s oxygen is produced by the ocean. By increasing the amount of oxygen available in the atmosphere, oceans directly improve the air we breathe. However, when they are polluted, oceans start to lose this capacity, resulting in a decrease of air quality.
    2. THEY STORE CARBON DIOXIDE. About 50x more carbon dioxide is stored in the oceans than in Planet Earth’s atmosphere. Oceans play an essential role in mitigating climate change as they capture and store carbon dioxide that would otherwise stay in the atmosphere.
      3. THEY CONTAIN 99% OF HABITABLE SPACE ON THE PLANET. An estimate of 50-80% of all life is found in the ocean. However, ocean pollution is affecting at least 700 different marine species and killing 100 million marine mammals every year!

If humanity continues to endanger the oceans and the various benefits they provide life, as it is currently known, will be at risk. The oceans are the Earth’s biggest resource and humans simply cannot afford them to become a dumping ground for plastics and waste. That’s why ViTA’s focus is to REUSE, REDUCE AND RECYCLE. By using 100% OceanBound post-consumer recycled resin (PCR) - ViTA reuses an otherwise pollutant material and prevents it from entering the oceans. PCRs even carry a 70% lower carbon footprint than other plastics.

Even the smallest details of ViTA’s products, like the labels, are sustainable. For example, ViTA uses non-toxic ink and labels that can easily separate from the packaging to make sure all bottles are really recycled and not dumped into the oceans because of inseparable labels. By choosing ViTA, you choose to keep the Planet clean and help create a more sustainable future!
